COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After days of hard work clearing snow from its shelter, UPAWS is asking for donations including pet-safe ice melt, a flat-edge shovel, soft dog treats and durable dog chews to help care for rescued animals.   • 906 Sports Bar and Grill will host an Indoor Easter Market on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on its second floor (old Vera location), featuring over 20 vendors selling spring items such as plant starters and fresh bread to ease winter blues.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Tweet Garot Mechanical acquired Prime Specialty Contracting in February, keeping full operations at its Marquette and Escanaba offices. Founder Cory Bushong remains to lead his team (around 90 employees) serving residential, commercial and industrial clients across the UP.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, NMU will host a music-filled evening at 7:30 p.m. featuring Grammy-nominated The Westerlies + tomorrow it will hold its Jazz Festival with local schools joining the event, offering $12 tickets and free entry for children under 18.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in L’Anse now work in a brand-new science laboratory for microbiology courses, replacing online classes. The upgrade provides lab gear, microscopes, and touchscreen displays—boosting hands-on learning for nursing program students.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential mailed letters to over 187,000 Michigan students and families to inform them of their Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) eligibility. The letters provided guidance for Medicaid recipients seeking tuition support for skill certificates, associate and bachelor's degrees.  The Mining Journal
  • Northern Michigan University hosts NMU Giving Day (today) to celebrate Wildcat pride and fund select departments, programs and student-centered projects on campus.  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Treasury released guidance on a new 24 percent wholesale marijuana tax for cannabis businesses that took effect Jan. 1, setting quarterly payments for 2026 due April 20, July 20, and Oct. 20 and offering penalty relief if 75 percent is paid + filed by Jan. 20, 2027.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette Board of Light & Power said outages from this week’s blizzard were fewer than during the New Year’s storm — lower winds and less snow on trees allowed crews to restore power safely.   • Marquette Mountain Resort reopened Wednesday after a two-day closure due to a blizzard; staff groomed ski runs (leaving some areas natural) and will host the annual Spring Carnival starting Friday.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Three NMU hockey players have signed with ECHL teams as professionals; forward Kyle Bettens joins Indy Fuel, forward Caiden Gault signs with Greenville Swamp Rabbits, and defenseman Tynan Ewart signed with Maine Mariners (affiliates of NHL teams) as they move into pro hockey.  The Mining Journal
