- ➤ After nearly 30 years in Escanaba, Youngs Menswear opened its new store earlier this month at the Villa Annex Complex at 2112 W US-41 Suite 2 in Marquette. Owner Tyler Myrick said the shop offers rental + purchase of suits and tuxedos by appointment only. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Rep. Jack Bergman visited the Advanced Blending Solutions facility in Wallace on Tuesday and praised the company for its role in growing local small businesses—ABS employs nearly 120 workers from Upper Michigan and Northern Wisconsin. - ➤ NMU hosted its annual Wildcat WellBeing Fair on Tuesday at the Northern Center — where over 30 community agencies, NMU departments and student organizations offered interactive activities and resources for mental and physical health — to help students and faculty learn how to stay well during the winter. - ➤ Superior Central Elementary in Trenary is raising funds to replace its 34-year-old playground with new safety features and accessible equipment— the school needs an extra $80,000 out of a $130,000 goal and plans to complete the project by the end of summer. WZMQ 19
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Superior Wildlife Rehab and Education Center, a nonprofit started in February, is seeking donations from Marquette, Alger and Delta counties to build the U.P.'s first dedicated facility for treating injured and orphaned wildlife. Executive director Kyann Clarke said the project will allow licensed rehabilitators to move from part-time work to full-time positions — and provide local training and education in wildlife care. - ➤ The South Shore Fishing Association and Michigan DNR will restock Teal Lake with walleye, aiming to reach over one million fish in 10 years by adding new fish every other year so older stocks can grow. - ➤ The Marquette County Board voted Tuesday night to update its off-road vehicle ordinance so that rules for wearing seatbelts and helmets match state standards. Riders in side-by-sides with a factory roll cage, seatbelt, and eye protection or windshield are not required to wear a helmet—while the update also protects the rights of people with disabilities to use county roads. - ➤ Today the Marquette Planning Commission approved the next stage for the Veridea Group’s project on the old hospital site by confirming that its concept for 40 townhomes met the PUD criteria on Magnetic Street.
