COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rock Lions Club began its first can drive on Sunday, March 16th during Saint Urho’s Breakfast when volunteers collected non-perishable food items for local distribution by Mid-Peninsula School—club leaders said they plan to hold more drives at future events.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Stacy and Jared Haughey hosted an Irish fest fundraiser Sunday at UP North Lodge (Gwinn) to raise money for the U.P. Hospice Foundation and thank the community for its support. They held a raffle and silent auction and served corned beef and cabbage at the event.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, 20 local artists attended a craft workshop hosted by Ben’s Artistic Edge at Barrel — Beam in Marquette Township where they used burning tools heated over 300 degrees to create custom hat designs by choosing a stencil or drawing their own patterns.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Saturday, March 15th, U.P. teens were honored in Marquette for their art and writing at the regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards hosted by Northern Michigan University’s Northern Shores Writing Project. The contest received 113 submissions this year—up from eight last year—and national winners will be announced on March 26th.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WWF reports that the eastern monarch population nearly doubled in 2025 from 2.22 acres last winter to 4.42 acres—but the total remains far below long-term averages. Scientists say better weather in 2024 helped the rise while lost habitats, insect sprays, and warm winters still threaten the butterflies—and residents can help by letting milkweed grow.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette photographer Ron Mattson took a picture of an underwater creature in Lake Superior on March 6 that local Ojibwe reportedly call mishibizhiw—an unusual sight stirring nearby curiosity. The Mining Journal will soon invite area residents to send in similar photos.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is teaming up with the federal Administration for Community Living and local senior nutrition providers to mark the 53rd anniversary of the Senior Nutrition Program during March for Meals Month. Gov. Whitmer declared this month for meals — a program that provided millions of meals last fiscal year and links seniors to nutrition and wellness services — as communities work to support older adults facing food insecurity.  The Mining Journal
