COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Peter White Public Library is hosting its biannual Used Book Sale featuring hundreds of volumes plus a 50% discount on select titles and a $5 tote sale on Saturday in Marquette. The event supports library programs and ends today.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Organizers will lead a 17-mile walk on Saturday, April 25 from Knotty Pine to Up North Lodge to support UP Pink Power’s aid for local families. Registration is Friday, April 24 from 5+7 p.m. and Saturday morning from 8+9:15 a.m., with a $25 minimum donation and perks for higher fundraising.  The Mining Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Orbion Space Technology was acquired by York Space Systems and will continue building hall-effect thrusters. The company will keep its identity and expand its Sharon Avenue facility to add jobs and support a growing space defense market — a move aimed at lasting growth.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professionals from various fields gathered today at NMU’s Northern Center in Marquette for a grief support conference aimed at improving community care during tough times. Licensed counselor Molly Tomony (from Wisconsin) and NMU professor Dr. Yan Ciupak led sessions to share practical skills.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Negaunee Public Library has received nearly $10,000 in grants through the Pizza Hut Foundation's Slice of Literacy program. The library plans to expand its summer reading program, book clubs & robotics clubs for all ages soon.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Friday's clipper system left a light layer of snow, but a stronger storm will hit the U.P. Sunday and Monday with 1 to 3 feet of accumulation and gusts up to 55 mph along Lake Superior shores; residents should prepare for icy roads and possible power outages.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utility companies including the city of Escanaba and Marquette Board of Light and Power warned customers on Friday about a phone scam demanding payment to avoid disconnection. They stress that representatives will never request personal details and advise calling verified utility numbers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Enbridge Straits Maritime Operations Center recorded its 10,000th vessel observation on March 5 when the Algoma Niagara carrying road salt passed through the Straits of Mackinac. Staff has maintained a (24-7) watch for safety since April 2022.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Aspirus Health advises residents to schedule routine check-ups with their doctors to catch conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and some cancers that can develop without symptoms. Nurse Practitioner Brook Rocque stressed that feeling fine is not a substitute for early screening.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County Health Department partnered with Jim’s Jubilee (Ishpeming) and Modeltown Express (downtown Gwinn) to provide free Naloxone from refurbished newspaper boxes. The boxes hold intranasal naloxone to help reverse an opioid overdose and offer a discreet option for the community.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette health officials have launched a $5M grant opportunity for nursing home quality-of-life projects; eligible groups must register on EGrAMS by 5 p.m. Friday, April 17 and submit their proposal by 3 p.m. Friday, April 24 (grant period spans Oct. 1 to Sept. 30).  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU women’s lacrosse edged Ashland 13-12 in windy, chilly conditions as Josie Lakosky scored five goals and Evita Weiche added a game-winning score with a minute and a half remaining. The Wildcats will face University of Indianapolis Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.  WZMQ 19
  • The popular charity hockey game — featuring teams of local police and firefighters — will take place on Friday, Mar. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Arena to raise funds for the county fire relief fund.  Sunny 101.9
  • NMU alpine ski team racers Bindas and Heathman earned second-team All-America honors in the slalom at USCSA Nationals in Lake Placid. Bindas, a freshman, posted a top second-run time and Heathman, a senior in his final nationals, finished 14th overall earning his first All-America honor.  WZMQ 19
