  • Bruce Closser biked 2,000 miles from Mobile, Alabama to Marquette last summer over six weeks – he plans a shorter ride next summer along the Natchez Trace and recalls friendly encounters during his journey.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • St. Vincent de Paul’s Marquette district launched a $1.2 million campaign to revitalize its facilities yesterday during a press conference at Northern Michigan University. Renovations will begin this summer and are expected to finish by Jan. 1, 2027 with more than 80% of funds already raised.  WZMQ 19
  • UPAWS is hosting St. Catty’s Day from noon to 4 p.m. today through Sunday in GWINN, where people draw a lucky coin to set a cat adoption fee ranging between $10 and $40 (one adoption is free for cats six months or older). Walk-ins are welcome.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Bruce Closser, 81, presented details of his 2,600-mile bike ride from Alabama to Marquette last Thursday at the Marquette Regional History Center, having completed the journey in summer 2025. He credited his multiple driving partners for helping manage challenging days on the route.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette father John DeMay is watching a California trial testing tech companies' duty to design safe social media after his son died in a sextortion scheme on Instagram. He has spent years speaking to families & lawmakers about online safety, and a verdict is expected in the next few days.  WZMQ 19
  • At Superior Dome, the 31st Annual U.P. Boat, Sport and RV Show offers 70 vendors and family fun later this month. It runs Friday, March 27 from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU Extension hosted its annual Agriculture for Tomorrow Conference at Bay College in Escanaba on Thursday — inviting farmers and homesteaders to network with groups like UPCAP while learning new farm-to-institution marketing strategies. The event brought diverse agriculture experts together.  WZMQ 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan Tech guard Marcus Tomashek earned his third All-Region honor when he was named to the D2CCA First Team (after a second team selection last season); the men's team will begin its season Saturday against Lake Erie at 12 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech’s Stiven Sardarian earned CCHA Forward of the Year with a league-high 22 assists and strong season stats — he will lead his team in a CCHA Tournament Semifinal at Minnesota State on Saturday.  WZMQ 19
  • Senior Luke Fricker earned Second-team All-American honors after finishing tenth in the 7.5 Classic Individual Start at the NCAA Championships in Midway, Utah on March 12; his strong final lap (6:25) helped boost NMU's nordic ski team as they prepare for Saturday's Mass Start.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU’s men’s alpine ski team finished fifth in the giant slalom at the USCSA National Championships on Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid today, competing in fog, rain & wind conditions that challenged strong runs.  WZMQ 19
