COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 3rd annual Yooper Poker Run kicks off Friday at 9 a.m. across 25 local businesses—participants pay $20 for a passport to collect stamps and must turn in completed passports at AJ’s Lodge and Oven in Bergland by 9 p.m. for a $1,000 prize that supports local trail grooming clubs.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Food Co-op will host its first-ever Bracket Party this Saturday (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) where locals can sample cheeses before the Cheese Madness face-offs start on Monday, March 16 and run until March 26; one participant will win a $100 gift card.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The American Legion post at 700 W. Bluff St. in Marquette is hosting a fish fry on Friday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. with white fish, cod, shrimp or chicken strips served with cole slaw; call 906-225-0781 for takeout orders beginning at 3:30 p.m.  The Mining Journal

  • Milano Chiropractic held its grand opening Wednesday afternoon at 1015 Country Lane #2 in Ishpeming, offering spinal adjustment (cupping and muscle work) and lumbar traction care to new patients. Dr. Kelly Milano expects to partner with local organizations to boost community health.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, NMU hosted a free Anishinaabe rock concert at Forest Roberts Theatre where the band Wawiyeyaa (the circle) mixed traditional instruments with rock beats. Attendees enjoyed door prizes and merchandise, and the band will perform at additional local venues this summer.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Baila U.P. is hosting its 2nd annual Winter Whirl Sunday at Ore Dock Brewing Company with a waltz lesson and rotating partner dances. Founder Lize Stefanac said the event will help guests enjoy social dancing for exercise and artistic expression.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Economic Club of Marquette County is hosting its next monthly dinner meeting Monday evening at the Holiday Inn, featuring speaker Paul Meneghini (Enbridge’s Manager of Community Engagement for Michigan) with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m., and his talk at 7:30 p.m.  Sunny 101.9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County saw a snowstorm Wednesday as crews cleared major roads while many residents used snowblowers + shovels to handle their driveways, and winter sports fans enjoyed the extra snow. Another storm expected Friday will extend chances for skating and snowboarding across local areas.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Fisheries Research Station announced that Lake Superior's lake trout have naturally recovered, so no more stocking is needed. Surveys in Upper Michigan lakes will begin soon—continuing efforts to monitor fish populations in the Great Lakes.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Under the Superior Watershed Partnership's guidance, thousands of Blue-Spotted Salamanders will cross safely into their spawning habitats as Peter White Drive closes from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. Sunday, March 15. Residents are advised to use flashlights (not camera flash) to avoid disrupting the migration.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette roads face pothole season as recent warming triggers freeze-thaw cycles that damage pavement. Public Works director Scott Cambensy said crews will continue repairs under less-than-ideal winter conditions and urged drivers to report potholes at 906-228-0444.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Skyline Central Boys Basketball All-Stars 2026 event, Forest Park earned varsity overall and large school honors with an 8-0 record, and Vic Giuliani and coach Jason Price were named Player and Coach of the Year; Norway and North Dickinson also received awards in JV and small school categories.  WZMQ 19
