COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Teal Lake Meltdown, now in its tenth year, has already raised nearly $4,000 for the Negaunee Lions Club and broke last year’s $3,661 record. Tickets for the contest, which benefits local grants and events, will remain available until the contest closes on April 1. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The fourth annual Celebrity Pie Smash will be held Friday at Barrel & Beam in Marquette and is co-hosted by Peace Pie Company, letting guests pay $5 to throw or redirect pies so funds go to the Upper Peninsula Suicide Survivors Fund. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Aurora Fitness and Yoga is hosting an athletic clothing swap event on Sunday, Mar. 22 from 12 to 2:30 p.m. at its facility; participants should bring gently used athletic clothing but avoid shoes, underwear or worn-out bras as local vendors join the event. Upper Michigan's Source
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A new exhibit at DeVos Art Museum features nearly 40 works by 19 U.P. students and will close Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (the event includes an awards ceremony) on NMU’s campus. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Strega Nonna hosts a benefit this Sunday at 432 Iron St in Negaunee that includes a buffet dinner, live music, and a theatre show to raise money for the Vista Theater restoration while city manager Nate Heffron shares an update. The Mining Journal
- ➤ On Friday, March 13 from 7-10 p.m., Ramble Table will record a live surf rock album at Blackrocks Brewery in downtown Marquette using audience participation for a vinyl release. The event will feature a live DJ set and a psychedelic light show and is open to the public. The Mining Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ NMU students have launched Northbound Post Co. to send subscription letters with art, photos and extras each week to help people feel less lonely. The class project runs this semester and will donate all earnings at its end to the Negaunee Luge Club + connect the community. Upper Michigan's Source
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Peter White Public Library, guests taped vapes to secure them for safe recycling as part of the Tape the Vape event organized by Citizens for a Clean & Safe Lake Superior and The Fire Station. - ➤ The Michigan DNR is planning a seasonal sea lamprey barrier on the Sucker River — following Tuesday night’s public meeting in Grand Marais — with phase two being engineered to cost between $2.5 and $3 million and potential installation in October pending further input sessions. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The West End Health Foundation is accepting applications online for its Spring Capital Grant cycle to fund non-programmatic improvements supporting community health in the West End. Applications are due by 5 p.m. April 1 (awards range from $1,000 to $10,000 with up to $50,000 available). The Mining Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The 12U AA Iron Range Miners hockey team from Negaunee won its District 8 tournament in Calumet and will play in the MAHA state tournament in Traverse City from Friday through Sunday at Centre Ice Arena. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Queen City Running Co.'s fifth annual Shamrock Sprint (a one-mile race) will take place on Thursday at 6 p.m. on the corner of East Ridge Street and Pine Street, and runners are invited to join a free drink at Blackrocks Brewery afterward. Upper Michigan's Source
