COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette Masonic Lodge No. 101 will host its second annual free day at the Upper Peninsula Children's Museum on Sunday (12 p.m. to 5 p.m.) with free entry for families to learn and play.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Northern Sky Dance and Fitness (owned by Skylar Taavola) has offered 30 weekly dance classes including ballet, acro and adaptive dance since 2023 and will present its Peter Pan Adventures in Neverland ballet on May 2 at Kaufman Auditorium.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight students (6th-8th grade) from Autrain-Onota are leaving for a competition in Gaylord today where their aquatic robots navigate an underwater course. The robots will pick up game pieces and film fish habitats to encourage learning beyond the classroom.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Prescribed burns planned by the Upper Peninsula Fire and Aviation Management Unit (UPFAMU) in Hiawatha and Ottawa national forests will reduce vegetation over 11,000 acres from this spring through fall. Some areas may be closed for public safety during burns.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Starting on Sunday, a section of Peter White Drive near the Ice Cream Store Pavilion will close to cars daily at 8 p.m. until May 15 to let blue-spotted salamanders migrate safely (foot traffic remains allowed during park hours).  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Aspirus Health warns that changes in sleep patterns could signal serious issues like sleep apnea and high blood pressure. Dr. Dakota Lundstrom advises residents to contact their doctor if they notice excessive sleepiness or pauses in breathing during sleep.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On March 9, 2026, Gala Malherbe, a physical therapist at Active Physical Therapy (Ishpeming Clinic), explained that physical therapy can ease pain and boost movement; she advised patients to get a doctor’s referral before starting treatment.  Sunny 101.9

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Restaurant Week is underway in downtown Marquette, featuring local restaurants showcasing special dishes + menus. The event, presented by the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, runs through Saturday night.  Sunny 101.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU’s women’s basketball team, now 25-7, earned an at-large bid into the Division II Tournament and will face No. 4 Wayne State on Friday, March 13 at Grand Valley State, marking its third straight tournament appearance.  WZMQ 19
  • Three NMU women's basketball players earned GLIAC honors Friday, with Jacy Weisbrod and Sarah Newcomer joining the First Team + Sydney Whitehouse named Sixth Woman of the Year + Weisbrod led the conference in scoring with national records in 3-pointers.  The Mining Journal
  • Michigan Tech’s Tyler Miller earned CCHA Defenseman of the Week honors with three assists in the playoff sweep of Bowling Green. The Huskies, ranked No. 19, will meet No. 16 Minnesota State at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center this Saturday at 8:07 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan Wildcats, a No. 5 seed, will face No. 4 Rockhurst on Saturday, March 14 in North Canton, hosted by Walsh + the team secured an at-large bid marking its fourth straight appearance in the field of 64.  WZMQ 19
