CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette Symphony Orchestra is set to perform a concert on Saturday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m. at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette. The program features a mix of symphonic and operatic selections (including works by Rossini and Bizet) with guest vocalists joining later in the performance.  Sunny 101.9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In 2025, cable subscribers dropped to about 1 million while customer complaints rose 117 percent, according to the Public Service Commission (PSC). The commission expects the trend to continue as more residents switch to streaming services in 2026.  The Mining Journal
  • Average gas prices in Michigan rose by 15.0 cents to $2.96 per gallon today — a 9.0-cent increase from last month and 2.6 cents above last year — based on GasBuddy’s survey of 4,913 stations statewide.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from several schools competed today at Kaufman Auditorium in the Tom Baldini Soapbox Challenge; Ainsley Brunette took the top award for her speech on online privacy while Sawyer Stelwagen earned the student pick award for discussing the dangers of blind ideologies.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The MiABLE program now lets people with disabilities save for care if they were disabled before age 46, nearly doubling the eligible number to almost one million Michiganders (MiABLE's director Scott de Varona said the change reflects real life).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Area Public Schools held a town hall meeting on Monday, Mar. 2 at Bothwell Middle School to discuss a bond proposal for nearly $60 million in facility updates; a second session with a building tour at 3:30 p.m. and a presentation at 5:00 p.m. will be held tomorrow at Marquette Senior High School.  Sunny 101.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rx Kids expanded its cash prescription program on March 2, offering expecting families $1,500 mid-pregnancy and $500 per month over six months. The program now serves 10 U.P. counties, including Marquette, to support families during a challenging time.  WZMQ 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU Women’s Lacrosse won 9-7 over Colorado Mesa on March 2 with Josie Lakosky and Vanessa Carrico each scoring three goals to push the Wildcats to a 5-0 start for the first time in program history. The team will face Colorado Springs tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. MT.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech’s Nordic ski teams qualified six athletes for the NCAA Championships after finishing second at the NCAA Central Regional Championship in Duluth. Podium finishes by skiers like Markus Groethe and Greta Hansen helped the team secure its full lineup to compete at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech ended its regular season in Houghton with a 4+3 overtime loss to Bowling Green Saturday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies clinched home ice for the CCHA quarterfinal series and will host BGSU in a best three game series this weekend.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU women's track and field finished fifth at the GLIAC Indoor Championships Sunday at University Center, Mich — Alayna Vandegriff took silver in the triple jump while Beverly Harper and teammates earned bronzes in relays and other events.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan's Dylan Kuehl was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring 36 and 41 points in two wins that helped secure a 25-5 season and a regular season championship.  WZMQ 19
