COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rotary Club of Marquette Harbor is offering competitive grants up to $15,000 for tax-exempt organizations throughout 2026 in Marquette. Applications must be received by March 13 and will primarily support youth projects (other projects may be considered based on fund availability).  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Fork, NMU's teaching kitchen, will reopen as a student-run restaurant in the Northern Center on campus. It will serve a four-course dinner on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from March 12 through April 2 and takes reservations at $65 per person.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU's welding program was featured on Wildcat Wednesday in Marquette on Feb. 27 when Assistant Professor Kirk Guckenberg shared his personal experience and explained the program tracks during Mark & Walt in the Morning; he encouraged those interested to visit the program website.  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NTN board announced on Saturday, Feb. 28 that Jeni Kilpela, who has served as outreach coordinator since 2023, will serve as interim executive director. Kilpela brings over a decade of library and event management experience to enhance NTN’s community partnerships.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • U of M Director of Preventive Cardiology Erick Brandt warns that many young adults face rising heart disease risk due to poor diet & sleep habits. He notes that 33% already have high blood pressure and predicts five-million cases in the next thirty years, urging earlier lifestyle changes.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Warm weather has brought residents outdoors in Marquette as many enjoyed sledding, hiking, and walking today, with families & visitors making the most of a sunny February day.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU hockey tied Minnesota State at 2 to 2 in regulation before falling in the shootout. Freshman Oliver Auyeung-Ashton made 42 saves + the Wildcats earned a crucial CCHA point ahead of their season finale tomorrow at 7:07 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech hockey may clinch a share of the CCHA title when they host Bowling Green at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena this weekend if they win a game. Tickets will be on sale online on Saturday night & the ticket office opens at 10 a.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Olympic snowboarder Nick Baumgartner said he is not done competing and will continue to inspire young athletes as he returns to Italy for the Winter Paralympics on Thursday (Mar. 6). He noted that coming home and feeling fans' support makes every trip especially rewarding.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The NMU women’s wrestling team earned five All-GLVC honors and a sportsmanship award from the GLVC. Junior Alissa Caltagirone, named to the First Team, and teammates Sophia Bassino, Abbie Miles, Alyssa Keane and Mickaela Keane will compete next weekend at the NCAA Championships.  WZMQ 19
