COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 100 NMU students, faculty and friends gathered at Anchor Church on Washington Street to remember Trenton Massey on Wednesday night. The memorial service followed a suspended search on Feb. 25 involving local volunteers and police.  The North Wind
  • Community Action Alger Marquette reported during its board meeting that funding for Head Start and home-delivered meals is now stable following earlier challenges + the organization invites residents to volunteer and support its vital services.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The Builders Show will run from March 6 to 8 at the Superior Dome as local builders prepare for a one-stop industry event. Northwoods Carpentry, a major sponsor, will display its work during the weekend.  Sunny 101.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michael P. Boyle, a California author with deep local roots, announced his novel 'Bloody Mary of Arranmore', set to release March 1. The book blends Irish folklore with local history from Beaver Island and reflects his enduring ties to the community.  The Mining Journal
  • On Wednesday night, NMU hosted an America 250 celebration at Lydia M. Olson Library in Harden Hall where the legacy of Phillis Wheatley was honored through poetic readings & musical performances that highlighted her life and achievements.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MiEarly Apprentice launched Thursday to help ease the shortage of early childhood educators. The state program offers no-cost, stackable pathways to a bachelor's degree and teacher certification with a dedicated success navigator for aspiring teachers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • First-year culinary arts students now run a restaurant at North Fork in the Northern Center to gain hands-on experience by preparing dishes created by upper-level students. The restaurant will open on Mar. 12 and operate on Tuesday and Thursday until Apr. 2.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The annual U.P. Principals’ Summit began Thursday in Marquette with 90 principals gathering at the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency to discuss changes in education. The two-day event focused on responsibly integrating artificial intelligence into classrooms — a key topic for evolving teaching methods.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer discussed future healthcare changes in the U.P. during her final State of the State address on TV6, citing Washington cuts and plans to extend Affordable Care Act protections. Senator Ed McBroom said rural grant funding is planned in the next state budget.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Copper Mountain Conference announced its Boys' Basketball All-Stars, naming Dollar Bay’s Liam Tourtillot as Player of the Year and Coach Jesse Kentala as Coach of the Year. The group also recognized top players from Dollar Bay, Bessemer, Baraga, L’Anse, and Wakefield-Marenisco (including defensive standout Aiden Partanen).  WZMQ 19
  • UP Swimmers of the Year have been announced with Marquette’s Kaytlin Roell + Gladstone’s Tyler Soderman recognized as top high school swimmers, and coach Erik Johnson from Houghton overseeing the selections.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan Wildcats beat Roosevelt 100-87 on Thursday with Dylan Kuehl scoring a career-high 36 points. The Wildcats (15-4) will host Parkside Saturday at 3 p.m. to clinch a share of the regular season title and the top seed in the GLIAC tournament.  WZMQ 19
