COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Record crowds attended the UP200 opening ceremonies in downtown Marquette on Feb. 13 with about 10,700 people present, which was 2,000 more than last year; the Marquette Downtown Development Authority used Placer.ai software to track attendance numbers.  Sunny 101.9
  • Partridge Creek Farm in Ishpeming announced that registration is open for its 2026 CSA membership, offering 17 weeks of fresh produce (pick-ups on Wednesdays from June 24 to Oct. 14) along with weekly recipe emails and a tote bag for community members.  The Mining Journal
  • In Marquette, the board of Noquemanon Trails Network said Lori Hauswirth (after eight years of service) ended her tenure on Feb. 19; the board is managing the leadership change to keep trail operations running as usual.  The Mining Journal

  • Presque Deli celebrated its official opening on Feb. 23 at 1635 Presque Isle Avenue as owners Mario Gohl, Heath Lefke and Scott Maynard, aided by the Lake Superior Community Partnership, launched a new spot offering deli favorites + a grab-and-go cooler for quick meals.  The Mining Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Yesterday, police continued searching for NMU student Trenton Massey, who was seen Sunday near Founder’s Landing in olive-green and black. Volunteers met at Hampton Inn lobby at 10 a.m. to search the lower harbor after a hole in the ice was found, and officials urge residents to check cameras.  The North Wind

  • On Friday, March 13, blues guitarist D.K. Harrell and his band will perform at Mather Inn in Ishpeming+ tickets cost $10 and are available in-person at the venue or Marquette Wallpaper and Paint. His set from the new album Talkin’ Heavy marks the return of the Marquette Area Blues Society.  WZMQ 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy’s report shows Michigan gas prices dropped 14.8 cents to an average of $2.81 per gallon today — the prices are 4.6 cents lower than last month and 24.2 cents lower than a year ago.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • This week, groups in the U.P. join National Invasive Species Awareness Week to protect local ecosystems by urging residents to clean boats and attend workshops at boat launches + mid-May volunteer events will remove invasive species and plant natives.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Manager Karen Kovacs said city crews are working overtime to clear record snowfall that has caused safety, logistics, and budget concerns. Residents are asked to remain patient as officials manage challenges from successive storms.  Sunny 101.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Superior Health Foundation distributed 32 new AEDs to community groups, churches and non-profit organizations in the Upper Peninsula today — the program also partners with Superior Life Services to offer AED, CPR and first aid training so responders are prepared for cardiac emergencies.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • The Builders Show, hosted by the Upper Peninsula Home Builders Association, nears capacity as only two vendor spots remain for the event beginning Mar. 6 in Marquette.
