COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several local businesses are supporting search parties for missing man Trenton Massey by providing free food and drinks during business hours. Babycakes, the Marquette Regional History Center and Lake Superior Press offer warm refreshments (including coffee) to help volunteers as the community works to find him.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Keweenaw Community Foundation will open spring grant applications next week to award $68,000 for community projects in Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties. Applicants can submit proposals starting March 1 and join a grant open house on March 9 (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.) at the Hancock Community Hub.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Harbor Rotary is accepting grant applications for 2026 with amounts from $100 to $15,000. Art, science, youth and community programs can apply via resources on its website and funds are raised during events like Harborfest.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The American Legion post at 700 W. Bluff St. will host a fish fry Friday from 4:30-6:30 p.m., offering white fish, cod, shrimp or chicken strips with cole slaw (open to the public) and take-out orders beginning at 3:30 p.m. via 906-225-0781.  The Mining Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Everyday Wines celebrated its 15-year anniversary and new Cheese Cave grand opening on Feb. 4 at 129 W. Baraga Ave. The expanded space now offers cut-to-order cheeses, cured meats, and international specialty items (including chocolates and charcuterie) to enrich the shopping experience.  The Mining Journal
  • Today, Dollar Bay-based Wildwood Coating, Inc. earned AMPP QP3 certification that qualifies it to perform specialized coating work on U.S. Navy aircraft manufacturing programs including CVN-80 & CVN-81 vessels; the certification required a $250,000 investment and is expected to bring 10-12 new jobs and several million dollars in business.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trenary will host the 33rd annual Outhouse Classic on Saturday with an opening ceremony at 1:30 p.m. and a race starting at 2:00 p.m. along Trenary Ave—participants will craft creative outhouses from wood or cardboard and compete in contests such as the new Most Patriotic Patron contest.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Regional History Center is hosting U.P. Through 250 Artifacts today to honor the nation’s 250th anniversary. The exhibit features clothing, documents, and pictures from the museum’s permanent collection and runs until Jan. 2.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County is set to host a dynamic slate of late winter and early spring events, including the Upper Michigan Ice Races on March 7 and Restaurant Week from March 8–14, with later events like the Spring Carnival and Festival of the Angry Bear to welcome warmer days.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Applications for the spring carpentry training program Hammer Time Boot Camp are open until March 23 for Upper Peninsula residents with a high school diploma or GED (limited to 10 participants). The course, offered by Michigan Works and Carpenters and Millwrights Local Union 1510, will be held April 13-17.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County is updating its 5-year Master Plan and invites residents to share their input in an online survey. The plan guides decisions on land use, housing, transportation, and tourism for future county growth.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts advise residents to watch for changes in sleep, appetite and interest to recognize early signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder, and if symptoms persist for weeks, to schedule an appointment with a doctor. Local therapists recommend setting small goals and increasing sunlight exposure to help boost mood as winter continues.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette County Health Department seeks input from 600 U.P. families who own firearms for a safe storage program aimed at rural residents. Selected families will be compensated up to $170 for their feedback + suggestions on handling their firearms safely.  Upper Michigan's Source
