EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ NMU hosted its inaugural Winter Research Day on Thursday at Jamrich Hall, where undergrads, graduates and faculty presented research in three-minute pitches and poster sessions. Student votes decided prize winners as the university plans to make the event an annual tradition. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Superior Hills Junior Kindergarten teacher Sarah Juday was named Regional Teacher of the Year after 12 years of teaching in the Upper Peninsula — her students’ enthusiasm helped earn her the honour. - ➤ Michigan State University Extension will host its Agriculture For Tomorrow Conference on Thursday, Mar. 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Joseph Heirman University Center at Bay College in Escanaba, featuring tracks on crops, livestock, local marketing and homesteading with online registration now open. - ➤ On Thursday, Feb. 19, NMU swept Michigan Tech in their GLIAC basketball game — a win that boosted the season and energized local fans. WZMQ 19
- ➤ The International Olympic Committee announced plans to merge artificial and natural track luge into Alpine luge, which may give local athletes a fast track to Olympic glory. Coach Keith Whitman said the new discipline may become the Olympic standard when the Winter Games return to the US in 2034. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Northern Michigan Wildcats defeated Michigan Tech 68-57 on Friday in Vandament Area as a big second half push helped the team secure the win. Key players Jacy Weisbrod + CJ Romero boosted the Wildcats to 22-5, and they will travel to Ferris State Saturday at 1:00 p.m. WZMQ 19
- ➤ At Mont Ripley today, soft snow slowed high school downhill runs at the Upper Peninsula Finals meet, but Marquette Sentinels dominated both girls’ and boys’ events — scoring near-perfect points under challenging conditions. The Mining Journal
- ➤ The NMU lacrosse team improved to 3-0 after defeating McKendree 16-6 today, with Josie Lakosky tying her career-high by scoring eight goals. The Wildcats will face the Lewis Flyers on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 1:00 p.m. ET at the Superior Dome. WZMQ 19
