COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Caregiver’s Butterfly Garden opens today at Ishpeming Senior Center and will be on display until January 2027. Visitors can view the exhibit during regular center hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • A training session for both new and veteran volunteers is held Friday at Calumet High School at 5:30 p.m. to prepare for CopperDog races next weekend, as organizers need help with dog handling + crossing guard roles.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • NMU Refugee Outreach Collective is hosting an Art & Jazz Charity Gala tonight from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Northern Center to support its refugee education program. Proceeds will help provide Starlink access for online college classes at a refugee camp in Malawi.  Sunny 101.9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report shows Michigan lost 2.2% of its 18-64 population since 2010 + Upper Peninsula tech hubs in Marquette and Houghton are attracting more young adults. Local leaders plan to build on this momentum to boost the region’s economy.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Peter White Public Library is accepting registration for its Winter Reading Program where children earn prizes for every 20 minutes of reading; teen registration closes Feb. 21 while youth registration ends Feb. 28.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Peter White Public Library kicked off its new Family Day and Night program yesterday with tower building and construction toys for kids, and the next event featuring an animal theme is set for March 25.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU students gathered on campus today for Ash Wednesday services despite a snow day, with both Catholic and non-Catholic students joining to connect with their faith. NMU Chaplain Father Dustin Larson and Missionary Angela Resch highlighted the service as a chance to build community—fostering inclusivity among students.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Escanaba Area Public Schools used its fifth inclement day yesterday as icy roads forced closures across the district, leaving only one of six allowed weather days remaining. The district may apply for extra days & extend hours & adjust its schedule if conditions worsen.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Since 1996, MDARD’s Clean Sweep Program has safely disposed of over 4 million pounds of pesticide containers in the U.P. with a record 280,000-pound disposal in 2025 at three sites including Bay Mills, Marquette County & Delta County; the program aims to prevent exposure to children and the environment.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County is deploying 60 plows to clear 8 inches of wet snow that created slushy intersections and one-lane traffic overnight. Operations (maintenance) Director Ross Olsen said recent dry weather allowed for truck repairs so teams are prepared for further storms.  WZMQ 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • Munising defeated Jeffers 250-220 in the High School Bowl match on WNMU-TV as 36 teams compete; games air Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Mondays at 3 p.m., and Jeffers will play Ironwood on March 21 + advance in the tournament.  The Mining Journal
