COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UPAWS is seeking nominations for the 2026 Awards — including the Assisi, Sliver Tag, Gold Heart, and Purple Paw Awards — to honor Yoopers and their pets for animal care; submit one-page pdf nominations by email as winners will be announced March 20 at the Cause for Paws Gala.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Honey Bear Classic will hold its 37th annual ski and snowshoe fundraiser on Valentine's Day at 10 a.m. at Big Bay Pathway to raise funds for local trail maintenance; participants can later warm up by the fire and enjoy dinner at Thunder Bay Inn (supporting Powell Township trails).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Lions Club is hosting Dance for Dogs at the Marquette Elks Lodge on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.—raising funds for guide dog training at Leader Dogs for the Blind’s U.P. chapter with live music and a raffle. Entry is $5 per person or $10 per family.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Travel Marquette CEO Susan Estler says Friday's UP200 sled dog race will bring mushers & fans downtown, with sold-out hotels and a boost for local restaurants amid one of the busiest winter weekends in the U.P.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU researchers are studying what works in state-funded after-school and summer programs with a focus on improving access and quality, noting an increase in participation in the Upper Peninsula. Future focus groups will launch in the spring to help guide improvements statewide.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette City Commission voted Monday night to apply for an MDOT grant that would cover up to 80% of the $600K non-motorized pathway along Wilson Street behind Marketplace Foods with a city match of $117,000 (project planned for 2027 if approved).  Upper Michigan's Source
