COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hiawatha National Forest will host its annual Winter Trails Day event on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Rapid River. Families can enjoy free ski and snowshoe rentals, ski instruction, light refreshments, and a warming fire from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette held the 9th Home Builder’s Association of the U.P.’s Wild Game Dinner of 2026 last night at the Northern Center. The event featured raffles, themed tables & special prizes including firearms to support local youth entering the trades.  Sunny 101.9
  • On Saturday, Feb. 14, fans can ride the Mush Bus from Marquette to Grand Marais to cheer on the UP200 sled dog teams. Tickets cost $40 & about 20 remain as of February 4, with departures from the Holiday Inn at 11:00 a.m. and Munising pick-ups available.  WZMQ 19

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Everyday Wines celebrates 15 years today by opening its new Cheese Cave + offering a 15% discount, letting customers sample whole wheels of cheese and explore deli ingredients at 129 W Baraga Ave in Marquette.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Negaunee is preparing for the Heikki Lunta Winter Festival this weekend with outdoor events including Meijer State Games opening ceremonies and a Rail Jam competition Friday evening + an ice fishing tournament on Teal Lake with winter fireworks Saturday night.  Sunny 101.9
  • A new mural has been unveiled in the Teen Zone at Peter White Public Library by artist Leo Barch, who created the design on his tablet (funded by the Friends of the Peter White Public Library) to brighten the space (a nod to his childhood ties to the library).  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the Peter White Public Library Youth Services Makerspace, youth can join monthly Pokémon Trading and Gaming Sessions from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 — parents should only bring cards they are willing to trade and children under 8 must be with an adult.  The Mining Journal
  • On Feb. 4, Marquette-Alger RESA discussed its Multi-Tier System of Supports during a radio interview, explaining how tailored classroom support helps students learn where a one-size-fits-all approach falls short.  Sunny 101.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress partners with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice to offer a free online workshop for informal caregivers via Zoom from 1:30–3 p.m. Thursdays, March 19 through April 23. The program builds skills to reduce stress and improve self-care (registration ends March 2).  The Mining Journal
  • Gary Roth, DO, MBA, chief medical officer for Michigan Health and Hospital Association supports the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2026 immunization schedule and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ guidance — urging families to consult their care providers for vaccine information.  The Mining Journal
  • Local health experts advise that properly fitted helmets lower concussion risks during winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, as careful safety checks can prevent injuries such as vision changes, headaches, and concentration issues (per local gear shop owner and Aspirus Health).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Because harsh winter weather canceled several blood drives and lowered donations, the Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center is asking local residents to donate blood—especially type O and A—to help keep supplies ready for emergencies.  The Mining Journal
