COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to offer a drive-through mobile food pantry at 219 Silver Creek Road on Thursday, Feb. 12. Food distribution begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 11:30 a.m. or until supplies run out — serving about 550 families.  The Mining Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Travel Marquette introduced Kristin Weyher as its new Group Marketing Manager when she appeared on TV6 Tuesday to explain her role in coordinating travel accommodations and promoting local restaurants and outdoor escapes. She said she quickly fell for the area's charm after exploring local parks and hikes.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gallery Marquette in the Masonic building at 130 W. Washington St. will host the exhibit 'from sweet waters' from Feb. 8 to March 8, with handmade platinum prints + framed images by local photographer will Sharp. A free reception will run from 4 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Westwood High School officials in Ishpeming released the first semester honor roll today, listing students who earned all As and a 3.0 GPA or better across various grade levels.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday, the county board accepted a $1M EGLE grant to address PFAS contamination at the old airport & water wells in Negaunee; commissioners will review public concerns at a Feb. 17 meeting at the Henry A. Skewis Courthouse Annex.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marquette Fire Department warned that the Lower Harbor ice is unsafe after reports of a resident falling through this morning – officials advise residents to avoid ice skating, walking and ice fishing until conditions improve.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan Tech defenseman Jack Anderson earned his second weekly honor after a goal and two assists in Saturday’s 4-3 win over St. Thomas. Tech — ranked No. 20 — will host No. 16 Augustana for its Winter Carnival series this weekend.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan’s lacrosse team was projected second in the GLIAC preseason poll by coaches. The Wildcats will host five home games starting Feb. 13 and then travel for road contests as their season unfolds with conference play set to begin March 20 and playoffs scheduled for May 1.  WZMQ 19
  • The NMU women’s nordic ski team posted strong results today at Tech Trails (on the Michigan Tech campus) as three athletes finished in the top 10 of the 20k mass start. Lauren McCollor finished fifth and the team will head to the CCSA Conference Championships starting Friday, Feb. 13.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU's men's nordic ski team swept the podium in a 20k mass start at Michigan Tech with Kraftson + Fricker finishing first and second and Albrecht edging Campbell for bronze by 0.1 sec. The Wildcats will head to Minneapolis for the CCSA Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 13.  WZMQ 19
  • Gladstone's Lillie Johnson surpassed 2,000 career points on Feb. 3, marking a key milestone in her sports career.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan University head football coach Matt Janus announced four new assistant coaches—Cade Garcia, Kyle Krezek, Zach Metkler, and Isaiah Powell-Major—to boost player development and on-field performance at NMU. Their diverse experience spans Division I, II, and FCS football.  WZMQ 19
