Hundreds took part in the second annual Winterfest at Marquette Mountain Resort on Saturday, joining races and a torchlight parade + the event will continue today with NASTAR Racing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Scouts from the U.P. gathered at Bay de Noc and Grand Island Trailhead on Saturday for the Hiawathaland Klondike Derby and Cuboree where they learned winter skills including snowshoeing, building a fire from a snowbank, and bobsled riding (85 participants took part).
Al Qual Recreation Area has opened its tube slide for the season, letting kids enjoy winter fun on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The $15 cash-only pass makes the ride available until mid-March, though early snow melt could end operations sooner.
🎭 Culture
Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center opened Saturday with an exhibit showing letters between Theodore Roosevelt and George Shiras III that detail the work behind the migratory bird act.
The exhibit is available through May 2, and the center is open weekdays (12 to 5 p.m.) and Saturdays (12 to 4 p.m.).
🏈 Sports
NMU women’s nordic ski team finished with five top-10 finishes on day one of the MTU Invite in Houghton + Lauren McCollor won bronze in the 5k classic.
The team will compete tomorrow in the 20k mass start at 10:45 a.m. ET.
NMU wrestlers lost 32 to 14 to UW-Stevens Point on Friday night, finishing with a 10 to 4 dual record + they will prepare for the NCAA Regional Qualifier on Saturday, Feb.

Wildcats beat Davenport 95-62 Saturday as Jacy Weisbrod became NMU's all-time three-point leader with her 248th triple, moving NMU to 18-4 while holding second spot in the GLIAC at 9-3.
X Games medalists Brett Turcotte, Willie Elam, and Kyle Saxton performed a freestyle snowmobile show yesterday at Backcountry Village in South Range during the Winter Kickoff in the Keweenaw (a grand opening for a new 300-acre powersports resort).
The No. 10 NMU Wildcats beat the Davenport Panthers 77-63 at Caledonia, with coach Matt Majkrzak celebrating his 36th birthday and moving the team to a 19-3 record overall and 10-2 in GLIAC play.
Northern will host Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
