- ➤ Volunteers for the U.P. 200 are finalizing plans for the race two weeks from now downtown. Over two dozen Northern Michigan University criminal justice students will assist with crowd control (helping spectators follow designated crossing areas). WZMQ 19
- ➤ Everyday Wines will hold a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 129 W. Baraga Ave. in Marquette to celebrate 15 years in business (and the debut of its new Cheese Cave expansion); the public is invited to attend. The Mining Journal

- ➤ Marquette County first responders rescued a 64-year-old skier from Williamsburg (who went into diabetic shock on Blueberry Ridge Trails last Saturday) and transported him through -27°F weather to the hospital where he is now recovering. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ On Friday morning, LSCP met with local economic experts to review 2026 projections in discussion of growth in the Upper Peninsula. LSCP CEO Christopher Germain announced his early summer departure, ensuring a smooth transition as plans include a venture fund from Michigan Tech and a new development foundation in May. WZMQ 19

- ➤ Breakwater Federal Credit Union announced a new scholarship program awarding three $1,500 scholarships—up from prior years—for students in Baraga, Keweenaw and Houghton counties planning for college or trade school next year. - ➤ Northern Michigan University reopened its library after a two year break and now features updated furniture, an audio studio, more outlets & study pods and a fireplace lounge. The library now offers Community Borrower cards that let locals check out books for a $25 fee. The North Wind
- ➤ Negaunee Public Library awarded Lori Waters a prize package for winning the 2025 Readers Dozen Book Challenge; the library now invites adults and independent youth to join a free monthly themed reading challenge for 2026 by visiting, calling 906-475-7700 extension 18, or filling out a form before noon today. - ➤ Marquette bird watchers report that the severe winter has shifted local birds to new habits; many robins and finches now visit feeders near Mattson Park and roadside crab apple trees to gain extra warmth, and species use evergreen cover to conserve heat (with swans spotted on the Dead River). - ➤ MDOT reminds drivers to maintain a 200-foot gap behind plow trucks to avoid a $100 fine as crews clear roads overnight in our area — officials stress that the safe distance is vital because plowing can kick up snow that hinders visibility. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Treasury urges residents to check an online database for lost or abandoned property this Sunday for National Unclaimed Property Day in Marquette. - ➤ Three local high school teams—Marquette in the boys and X divisions and Westwood in the girls division—posted perfect 9-0 records during the Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference regular season at River Rock Lanes today, and tournaments will begin this weekend with regional events scheduled through Feb. 14. - ➤ NMU Wildcats defeated Bemidji State 2+0 today as Oliver Auyeung-Ashton earned his first collegiate shutout by saving 38 shots. The win moved the team into the final playoff position, and game two is set at 6:07 p.m. at Berry Events Center. WZMQ 19
