COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Upper Peninsula Health Plan is hosting the Beat The Winter Blues Community Resource Fair this Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Westwood High School in the West End, offering free indoor and outdoor activities + community resources.  Sunny 101.9
  • The 9th annual HBA Wild Game Dinner took place Thursday at the Northern Center on NMU’s campus as a fundraiser featuring wild game dishes, guest speakers and raffles for guns + gear. Tickets sold out two months ago, showing strong local support.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trenary will host its 33rd Outhouse Classic on Saturday, Feb. 28, celebrating American patriotism for the US 250th birthday. Gates open at 11 a.m., opening ceremonies begin at 1:30 p.m., and advance pins are on sale next week at Trenary Tavern (best-dressed spectators can enter the competition).  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette Hope First Church hosted a musical vigil with local musicians performing familiar Civil Rights anthems in a packed sanctuary. Organizer Erin Colwitz said the event offers a peaceful break from bad news + a chance for neighbors to lean on each other.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette Fringe will host its third midwinter gala at the U.P. Children’s Museum on Feb. 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear or create a mask while enjoying music, a cash bar, and festivities to support the group’s annual programming.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Yesterday, NMU officials recounted the 30-year history of the university’s involvement in the UP200 sled dog race, highlighting the formal Gold Sponsorship and increased student engagement that began three years ago to provide real marketing and event planning experience.  Sunny 101.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Negaunee City Council approved a .49-mill bond proposal for ice arena repairs that voters will decide on May 5. City Manager Nate Heffron said the up to $1.25 million plan will include updates to chiller and dehumidifier systems and improvements to locker rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, seating and parking.  Sunny 101.9
  • Governor Whitmer announced Michigan’s first maritime strategy today; the 10-year plan is set to boost economic growth and create good-paying jobs in the state’s maritime industry while protecting the Great Lakes.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local art therapist Amy Rynn hosted an art therapy session for political grief on Jan. 8 at The Burrow in Ishpeming and will hold future sessions; the next is on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at 200 E. Division St. (donations suggested $5 to $20).  The Mining Journal
  • Active Physical Therapy's Chris McDowell shared joint health tips on Mark & Walt in the Morning from his Ishpeming Clinic update on Jan. 29. He advised doing low impact exercises, limiting long periods of sitting, and following a healthy lifestyle (including a good diet and avoiding smoking) to protect the joints.  Sunny 101.9
  • Lakeshore Skin and Body Med Spa in Marquette has introduced Ultra Clear, the world’s first FDA+cleared cold fiber laser that treats wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage and pigmentation with little downtime.   • UP 200 board president Ross Anthony calls for volunteers at Yoopersunited.com to support the upcoming sled dog races — Midnight Run and Jackpine 30 — scheduled for Feb. 12—16, with the full schedule posted at up200.org.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Grand Valley State Lakers beat the Northern Michigan Wildcats 85-80 on Thursday night in a game with 11 ties and 11 lead changes that snapped NMU's five-game win streak. The win leaves GVSU, NMU and Michigan Tech tied at 9-2 in conference play while NMU is set to face the Panthers on Saturday at 3 p.m.  WZMQ 19
