- ➤ Lake Superior Community Partnership CEO Christopher Germain will step down after guiding the organization since May 2022 & shaping it to meet local needs such as securing $3 million for the Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Musician Adam Kiddle from Almost Elvis wore an Elvis jumpsuit and skated on Lower Harbor Tuesday to bring cheer to locals—ice conditions rarely allow for such a playful performance in the community. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ A nationally touring art exhibit — Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate — has arrived at NMU and will be available until Mar. 21. The exhibit shows pieces that explore the impact of hate speech on minority communities. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Marquette Mountain will host its second Winterfest on Saturday, Jan. 31 with races, competitions and a torchlight parade, followed by open Nastar Racing on Sunday from 11 to 1. The event offers a spirited weekend for locals celebrating winter. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Accountants at Tailored CPAs advise residents to book tax appointments now as new deductions for tips, overtime, seniors, and vehicle interest may boost refunds. The United Way of Marquette County has restarted its free volunteer tax assistance program & residents can call 906-387-2125 for details. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Mortgage rates in Marquette County dropped 0.75% from last year, with the 30-year fixed rate near 6% and the 15-year rate around 5.5%, said Brian Syrjala from Range Bank + local experts expect eased bidding wars and more spring inventory to help homebuyers. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Forsyth Township Police received a bullet and stab vest for its K-9, Zeke — a detection dog with 14 months of service — donated by Vested Interest in K9s Inc.; the vest is expected to last five years and help keep the dog safe during risky situations. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Negaunee City Council approved a bond proposal for arena repairs and voters will consider a $1.25M measure on May 5 to fix the 40-year-old rink. If passed, upgrades will start in late spring (to ready it for the 2026-2027 hockey season), otherwise the facility may close. WZMQ 19
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Health officials say a slight rise in chickenpox cases is affecting Marquette, and NMU students recently received alerts about the outbreak. They advise residents to get vaccinated + wash their hands often to limit spread through respiratory droplets. Upper Michigan's Source
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ NMU's standout Jacy Weisbrod was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week — her second this season — after scoring 21 points in wins during a home weekend in Marquette. The senior led all GLIAC players with a 17.3-point average and set records for three-pointers. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU alpine teams dominated downhill racing in Biwabik, Minn. on a frigid day; the women clocked a giant slalom time of 3:12.61 and the men finished at 3:03.02 (races halted at 4 p.m. due to daylight) as both teams secured top finishes. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Former NMU Wildcat Zak Ketterson has been named to the 2026 US Olympic cross country ski team after a successful collegiate and professional career. He will compete in Italy (Feb. 6 through Feb. 22) with his teammates. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Michigan Tech forward Stiven Sardarian earned his fourth CCHA Forward of the Week after recording four points in Friday's 8-2 win in Marquette — boosting the Huskies' conference ranking.
