COMMUNITY NEWS

  • BabyCakes hosted a nontraditional speed dating event on Friday night in Marquette to ease loneliness and build new friendships among women with four-minute rounds and provided snacks. Future gatherings for different age groups will be held every Friday in February.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Town and Country Sales donated a vehicle to the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center to ensure veterans continue receiving free transport from Marquette while a local DAV vehicle is under repair + the donation honors a veteran from the dealership.  The Mining Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Thanks to a snowmobile trail built three years ago and ample snow accumulation, the Nahma Inn is seeing a boost in winter business today as local riders help fill its rooms, prompting plans to extend operating hours and host a pond hockey tournament on Feb. 7.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • The UP Children’s Museum will host its 23rd annual Culinary Journey on Feb. 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and local restaurants will offer off-menu dishes that bring global flavors to the event.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • British social media influencers Josh + Jase visited Marquette on Thursday as part of their Michigan tour, posting videos from local spots including the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse and stops at Delft Bistro and Walmart. They met local fans during their visit.  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Lake Superior Community Partnership will host a breakfast and business event on Friday, Jan. 30 at the Holiday Inn where regional leaders will discuss the 2026 economic outlook. The event runs from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and includes networking + registration is required to ensure space.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan Tech tree physiology professor Molly Cavaleri explained that while trees rarely explode from frost cracking under current U.P. conditions — heavy ice and snow more often cause branches to break and fall, which could damage nearby buildings and cars.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are repairing a water main break near Washington and Excelsior in Ishpeming; drivers may face detours and water pressure changes until repairs finish.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • A community wellness walk is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Superior Dome, where Dr. Clary-Lantis will share a brief talk on healthy aging before participants walk at their own pace. Visit the Facebook page for updates + any cancellations.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan Tech earned a 75-74 win over Wayne State on Thursday at the SDC Gymnasium, as Tomashek scored 35 points + reached his 18th 30-point game; the Huskies will host Purdue Northwest today at 2:00 p.m. to extend their six-game win streak.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech hockey beat Northern Michigan 8-2 on Friday at Berry Events Center, marking their sixth straight win and eighth over the Wildcats. Tech (17-8-2 overall, 12-3-2 CCHA) will complete the season series today at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena at 6:07 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Nick Baumgartner of Iron River, who won gold in 2022, will compete at his fifth Games in Milan-Cortina from Feb. 6-22 + Ski Brule is hosting a benefit party today from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. to support his Olympic bid.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Former NMU skier Zak Ketterson was named to the US Olympic cross-country ski team & will compete in upcoming events. He earned multiple honors with the Wildcats before joining the professional ranks.  WZMQ 19
  • A fundraising spaghetti dinner will take place on Sunday, Jan. 25, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Post #44 on 700 Bluff Street to support the 14U AA Travel Hockey Team, featuring raffle prizes and a drawing for a $250 VISA gift card.  Sunny 101.9
  • For today’s Noquemanon Ski Marathon, about 1,300 skiers are set to compete after hundreds picked up race packets at NMU’s Superior Dome on Friday. Extreme cold has delayed the 50K start by one hour (ensuring extra ski patrol and volunteer support), and Friday’s Junior Noque was canceled.  Upper Michigan's Source
