COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mariucci Family Beacon House’s third annual event will allow locals to learn flower arranging with an expert and sample bourbon + wines while supporting Beacon House operations. It is scheduled for Feb. 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with registration closing Feb. 9 and only 18 seats remaining.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Peter White Library will host its fifth annual Prom Dress Swap on Feb. 21, inviting teen donations to give formal gowns a second life. Donations (accepted in the Teen Zone at the library) will be received until Feb. 20.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Incredible Bank, formerly River Valley Bank (serving the community since 2004), held a ribbon cutting ceremony on West Washington Street on Wednesday after finishing renovations in partnership with the Lake Superior Community Partnership. The event marked its renewed commitment to local customers.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ishpeming nonprofit Forging Futures will host a showing of 'Anatomy '59' on Jan. 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to raise funds for youth programs, and the event will include a social hour with filmmaker John Pepin and Judge Michelle Rick.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, U.P. middle school students attended Michigan Tech’s Mind Trekkers event at the U.P. State Fairgrounds, where over 60 hands-on activities introduced STEM careers. Students learned chemical reactions, tried liquid nitrogen ice cream, and climbed a power pole, with local businesses including North Country Electrical joining the day.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU held its Winter Student Organization Fair yesterday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Jamrich Hall—about 20 clubs, including a Taylor Swift interest club and Students Demand Action, welcomed students with snacks and opportunities to learn more about campus groups.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The MAPS Board of Education adopted a $59M bond resolution after community surveys uncovered over $100M in infrastructure needs, leading to plans to raise the millage from 1.31 to 1.55 over 28 years. Town halls are scheduled for March before voters decide on May 5 to fund the improvements — especially at Bothwell.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marshfield Clinic Marquette Center now offers radiology services including x-rays at 1414 W. Fair Ave. A ribbon cutting held in October celebrated the new service that delivers results within the hour.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette veterinarians advise owners to assess their pets’ health (considering pre‐existing conditions and coat type) before taking them outside in extreme cold and to use booties for walks longer than five minutes; they also recommend keeping cattle water supplies heated (to prevent freezing).  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Carson Wealth Noquemanon Ski Marathon presented by Honor Credit Union is scheduled for this weekend in Marquette County and is seeking volunteers to support trails, start + finish lines, road crossings, and the Superior Dome.
