- ➤ The second annual West End Card Show drew over 400 card collectors and more than 30 vendors to River Rock Lanes on Saturday as enthusiasts traded and sold cards. The event also welcomed younger players who are keeping the tradition alive. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The 10th annual Teal Lake Melt-Down contest is underway in Negaunee where locals can guess when the replica mining headframe will break through the ice. Entries cost $5 and guesses are accepted until April 1 & the winning guess earns half the contest proceeds for the Lions Club. Upper Michigan's Source
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday night, the Marquette Symphony Orchestra played movie scores from Indiana Jones, Jaws and Star Wars at Kaufman Auditorium. The group will hold two more concerts soon featuring opera and Beethoven music. Upper Michigan's Source
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The NMU alpine ski team opened its season at USCSA Wild Mountain today with the women winning gold and the men finishing with silver and bronze, and they will compete in the slalom event tomorrow. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU's women’s wrestling team shined at the Mike Duroe Invitational in Mount Vernon, Iowa on Saturday—Sophia Bassino led her team with five technical falls for the 160-pound title while others secured top finishes. The team will face opponents in Allendale for the GLVC Conference Duals on Saturday, Jan. 24. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU women’s swimming & diving team beat UW-Stevens Point 185-75 at the PEIF Pool today. Kalina Ceglinski earned 18 points in two diving events that helped secure the win. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Children in the Ishpeming Ski Club are practicing for the Junior Ski Jumping Tournament at the U.P. Nordic Ski Complex in Negaunee. The free event begins today at 11 a.m. Eastern and will benefit the club and ski programs. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The NMU Wildcats won 86-77 on Saturday at University Center, with five players scoring in double figures; redshirt freshman Bennett Basich led with 13 points & 14 rebounds and the team improved to 16-2 overall, tying atop the GLIAC. WZMQ 19
- ➤ The NMU men’s swim and dive team won 133-128 over UW-Stevens Point today at the PEIF Pool. Matteo Ballardin and Daniel Khmara each earned 18 points in a competitive meet that highlighted strong team effort. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Saturday, the No. 13 NMU women’s basketball team defeated SVSU 67 — 51 at University Center, with Jacy Weisbrod scoring 21 points in a decisive third quarter; the Wildcats will host Purdue Northwest on Thursday, Jan. 22 and face Wayne State on Saturday, Jan. 24. WZMQ 19
