CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Marquette Regional History Center welcomes nominations for the Helen Longyear Paul Award and Peter White Award to honor efforts that conserve local history. Drop off nominations at the museum by 5 p.m. Feb. 6 (winners will be announced at the annual meeting on Feb. 25). The Mining Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Michigan Natural Resources Commission approved new rules letting licensed hunters remove coyotes. Starting March 1, the changes divide the year into a management season from March 2 to Oct. 14 and a hunting season from Oct. 15 to March 1, with dog hunts banned from Nov. 15-30. The Mining Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy announced $9 million in grants to 19 airports including Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport to fund PFAS testing & cleanup measures on firefighting gear and contaminated water. WZMQ 19
- ➤ The Michigan House passed a bill requiring public K-12 schools to ban smartphones during class, though students may use basic phones (which allow calling and texting). The law awaits a Senate measure and is meant to cut distractions to boost student health and curb cyberbullying. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Gov. Whitmer signed an executive directive to launch an initiative to explore geologic hydrogen as a clean fuel in Michigan. The project may attract investments and create jobs by assessing the state’s natural hydrogen reserves. The Mining Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UP Health System–Marquette has hired PA-C Kylee Erickson for Marquette Respiratory Medicine; she will treat respiratory conditions for patients across the Upper Peninsula. Erickson earned her master's at Clarkson University + a bachelor's at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. The Mining Journal

- ➤ Michigan Tech's hockey team beat Minnesota State 3-1 on Friday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 24 saves and the Huskies (improving to 15-8-2 overall) will host the Mavericks today at 6:07 p.m. WZMQ 19
- ➤ At Suicide Hill in Ishpeming, 37 jumpers competed Friday night after a snow delay in the 139th annual tournament. The event continues today with junior qualifiers, a U.S. Cup competition and community festivities — including concessions, bonfires, a beer tent and fireworks. Upper Michigan's Source
