COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers can help run the Noquemanon Ski Marathon on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24 in the Upper Peninsula. The event offers races from 50K to adaptive events (600 volunteers are needed) and each helper will receive a commemorative pint glass.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors donated $5,000 to Marquette Junior Hockey to buy a new Zamboni for Lakeview Arena, benefiting teams & local skaters.  The Mining Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • If marijuana is reclassified, cannabis companies will be able to deduct business expenses from taxes to cut costs nearly in half overnight, industry experts said, and growers like Boreal Cannabis in Gwinn are poised to benefit as market competition continues (pending regulatory changes).  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Beaumier UP Heritage Center moved from Gries Hall to Harden Hall in the renovated Lydia M. Olson Library at NMU to double its space and will open Jan. 31 with exhibits on George Shiras III and Theodore Roosevelt to support shared projects with NMU Archives.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Symphony Orchestra will perform a sold out John Williams concert Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Kaufman Auditorium — the show features film scores from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and more. The orchestra prepares with just a month’s notice and limited rehearsals before each performance.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.P. Hospice Foundation secured a grant to host Bridging Theory and Practice in Supporting Children and Youth, a one-day conference for professionals to learn grief support techniques that include CEUs. It will be held March 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Northern Center at NMU.  The Mining Journal
  • Teens can enter the Winter Reading challenge at the Peter White Public Library from Feb. 1-28 to win one of two $50 gift cards — students in grades 6-12 must register online by 9 a.m. on Feb. 22, and logs must be turned in by Feb. 28.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Negaunee City Council approved a $1.25 million bond and a 40-acre land swap with Porter Limited to fund critical repairs at the ice arena, with the bond moving to the ballot in May after city and county clerk reviews + ensuring the facility remains operational.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The NMU women’s basketball team won 80-61 over LSSU on Thursday night at Bud Cooper Gymnasium—improving its road record to 8-0—and will travel to Saginaw Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • UP 200 Board President Ross Anthony says the UP 200, Midnight Run and Jackpine 30 races will begin on Feb. 13 with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. downtown; the first team leaves at 7:00 p.m. and Midnight Run starts at 8:30 p.m. Race Headquarters is at the Holiday Inn.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Ishpeming Ski Club hosts the 139th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament this weekend in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Suicide Hill. The event features nationally sanctioned qualifiers, Nordic combined competitions, and family activities including bonfires & a beer tent with booster button entry supporting youth programs.  The Mining Journal
  • Dylan Kuehl led the NMU Wildcats to a 77-74 comeback win over Lake Superior State on Thursday night with 31 points and 11 rebounds as the team overcame a 14-point deficit. The Wildcats will face Saginaw Valley State on Saturday at 3 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Today the Ishpeming Ski Club launches the 139th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament at the U.P. Nordic Ski Complex with a U.S. Cup competition on the K90 and a Junior World Qualifier trial; additional Nordic Combined races and ski events will follow on Saturday and Sunday.  The Mining Journal
