COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette nonprofit Room at the Inn secured its overflow shelter at the Salvation Army chapel to help more residents stay safe. Volunteers are needed for brief 30-minute shifts setting up and taking down cots, and those seeking refuge should visit the warming center at 447 West Washington.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Monday, a local photographer snapped a photo of Hedwig (Harry Potter's pet snowy owl) at Lower Harbor, surprising residents in Marquette.  The Mining Journal
  • Engadine Sportsman’s Club and the HSC Foundation Inc. will host the 2026 Hiawatha Heritage Dog Sled Race, a free family event featuring three races - an 80-mile professional, 30-mile intermediate and 3-mile youth - alongside a Winter Carnival on Jan. 31 at the club’s Activities Complex.  The Mining Journal

  • The Economic Club of Marquette County will host its monthly dinner meeting in Marquette this Monday evening. The event starts with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and Alison Todak speaking at 7:30 p.m.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, new NMU President Dr. Chris Olsen (from Indiana State) shared his early impressions of campus life, enrollment trends, and goals for the semester during his interview with Mark & Walt in the Morning. His remarks set a clear vision for the community.  Sunny 101.9
  • Northern Michigan University is offering a welding course for beginners and intermediate hobbyists to learn safety, power sources, and equipment setup. The course runs Feb. 7-March 14 at the NMU Jacobetti Complex.  The Mining Journal
  • Athena Global Learning held its official launch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday in Marquette (partnered with the Lake Superior Community Partnership). Founded by local Dr. Athena Stanley, the company offers AI literacy, tutoring, and professional coaching for students and professionals.  The Mining Journal
  • The NMU Board of Trustees elected Missie Holmquist of Marquette as chair and Brigitte LaPointe-Dunham of Baraga as vice chair while recognizing outgoing chair Steve Young for four years of leadership. Holmquist is Upper Peninsula Health Plan's president and CEO and has served on the board since 2022 (LaPointe-Dunham joined in 2023).  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Marquette battled heavy, drifting snow on Wednesday as winter storms left little room for piled snow + neighbors coordinated clearing efforts while local crews plowed driveways amid strong winds.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lupine Family Dentistry opened Monday in Marquette and held an open house Wednesday to introduce its team + dental services including implant restorations, fillings and dentures; the clinic accepts all insurance and welcomes patients of all ages.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Superior Health Foundation (which serves U.P. communities) began accepting grant applications Wednesday for its Care Access Program, Health Impact grant, and medical equipment program to help lower medical costs and improve access. Applications for the Care Access Program are due (March 11).  Upper Michigan's Source
