COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UPAWS in Sands Township now has nine 12-week-old rescued puppies (fully vaccinated, microchipped and de-wormed) available for adoption after a recent rescue.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lundin Mining finalized the sale of the Eagle Mine and Humboldt mill in Marquette County to Talon Metals Corporation Friday in an all-stock deal; Talon said operations in the U.P. will continue with no changes and noted the mill is the only U.S. facility concentrating nickel ore.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Athena Global Learning, a new U.P.-based coaching program focusing on AI literacy and ethics, launched Tuesday morning in Marquette to serve families, individuals and businesses online, according to founder Dr. Athena Stanley.  WZMQ 19
  • The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education adopted a resolution to add a $59.995 million bond proposal to the May 5 ballot, following community feedback + facilities planning. The proposal seeks to fund critical improvements to infrastructure, building systems, and learning environments districtwide.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marshfield Clinic Marquette Center opened a new radiology office in October to offer on-site X-ray services; a ribbon-cutting held Tuesday highlighted its team of 17 providers + quick result turnaround. The clinic now reduces the need for offsite trips, speeding up patient care.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • UPHS – Marquette earned Primary Stroke Center Certification from the Joint Commission and American Stroke Association on Oct. 23 after a rigorous onsite review. The certification proves the hospital’s dedication to timely, high-quality stroke care for local patients.  WZMQ 19
  • On January 13, 2026, Active Physical Therapy in Marquette provided key insights on flat feet as Physical Therapist Joel Kangas explained the condition's stages + advised residents to contact the Advantedge Clinic for therapy if needed.  Sunny 101.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • The NMU Wildcats lost 70-52 to the Ferris State Bulldogs after a slow first half left them trailing significantly — Jacy Weisbrod led NMU with 16 points amid early turnovers, and the team will face Lake Superior State on Thursday, Jan. 15 in Sault Ste. Marie at 5:30 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan's Wildcats shot 63.3% and beat Ferris State 95–66 Monday night. Dylan Kuehl scored 23 points and Isaiah Allen celebrated his birthday with a career-high 20 points—boosting the team's confidence ahead of their game at Lake Superior State on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • The NMU women’s wrestling team won three duals at the Tiffin Open last Saturday, beating teams from Lourdes, Hiram and Frostburg — though they lost a close match to Otterbein. The team will travel to Mount Vernon for the Mike Duroe Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech's Max Koskipirtti earned his third CCHA Forward of the Week honor on Monday after scoring two goals in Friday's 5-2 win at Bemidji State. The team will host No. 17 Minnesota State at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday at 6:07 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • The Ishpeming Ski Club is hosting its 139th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament at the UP Nordic Ski Complex in Ishpeming from Friday through Sunday. The event will feature tailgating, bonfires, Saturday night fireworks — and a tribute to the 100th Anniversary of Suicide Hill.  Sunny 101.9
