COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Lakeview Arena and Tourist Park (including the Off-leash Area) reopened after a winter storm caused power outages and tree damage. The Parks and Recreation office confirmed Tuesday that programs and activities have resumed as crews clear debris. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Breakwater Federal Credit Union's employees volunteered 229 hours across Copper Country last year by assisting organizations like 31 Backpacks + City of Hancock. The credit union aims to boost its volunteer efforts in the new year. Upper Michigan's Source
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Michigan groups will host awareness trainings during National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and plan educational events in Marquette, Escanaba and Hancock, including sessions at hospitals and schools (to help identify potential trafficking victims) later this month. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Kids and adults can log reading hours and submit book reviews for prizes at the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library Winter Reading Challenge running until Feb. 28. The library also introduced a Winter Puzzle Challenge with a chance to win a puzzle board by solving puzzles. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Local schools are starting the new semester after an extended winter break (caused by weather), with Superior Central Schools adding new teachers and Aspen Ridge Elementary finishing gym and classroom updates. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The MDOC hosted its first January hiring open house on Tuesday at the Marquette Branch Prison and is seeking extra staff for corrections, medical, culinary, and support roles as short staffing continues (Assistant Deputy Warden Michael James noted the need for more help). WZMQ 19
- ➤ The Michigan DNR has opened turkey hunting license applications from Jan. 1 until Feb. 1 — a drawing is set for Mar. 2 and extra tags will be available from Mar. 9. Youth hunters now can purchase a tag alone and hunters must register their harvest via a QR code. Upper Michigan's Source
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Anytime Fitness (a 24-hour center) in Marquette sees a rise in memberships as residents begin new healthy habits this new year and manager Tim Martin said 15-minute sessions can lead to longer workouts; the gym also offers coach-led classes to guide those starting out. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Health experts advise local residents to read labels carefully on over-the-counter flu medications to target specific symptoms and avoid accidental overdoses for adults and children. They urge calling a doctor if a fever over 103°F (or a rash) develops. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Ishpeming’s Mya Hemmer signed with Baylor Volleyball and helped the Hematites beat Gwinn in a basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The move highlights her rising role in local sports. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Ishpeming Ski Club is preparing the 100-year-old Suicide Hill for the 139th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament. The hill will be ready early next week for practice runs with the tournament scheduled to begin Jan. 16 at the U.P. Nordic Ski Complex in Negaunee. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ UP200 organizer Darlene Walch says trail crews have begun grooming after the new year to build a solid snow base for the 228-mile race from Marquette to Grand Marais scheduled for Valentine’s Day weekend.
