COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Legion post at 700 W. Bluff St. will host a fish fry Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with whitefish, shrimp, cod and chicken strips served with baked potato or french fries and cole slaw; orders by phone begin at 3:30 p.m.  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan drivers are paying an average of $2.70 per gallon today, the lowest rate since 2021 and down 11 cents from last week; in Upper Michigan, Delta County sees prices as low as $2.42 while Mackinac County remains highest at $3.12 (AAA data).  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University’s Lydia Olson Library in Harden Hall will reopen to the public on Monday, Jan. 12 after renovations that began in early July; during the closure, borrowed items may be returned to the NMU Police Department at 2073 Sugarloaf Ave (temporary services remain in Gries Hall).  The Mining Journal
  • School districts in the Marquette-Alger RESA area have declined state Section 31aa funds for this fiscal year over new legal terms — officials said the move supports local control while maintaining commitment to student safety and mental health.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents are advised to exercise caution when running outdoors this winter as icy spots near the lake shore remain hazardous despite plowing. Queen City Running Co. General Manager Matthew Johnson recommends proper layering+ gradual warm-ups to help prevent injuries.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, Messiah Lutheran Church hosts an introductory Tai Chi and Qi Gong workshop led by Jon and Diana Magnuson, including Tai Chi ball practice. A $25 donation invites participants to attend a healthy brunch + support The Cedar Tree Institute.  The Mining Journal

  • LSSU Wildcats swept the NMU Lakers 2-1 in regulation in Sault Ste Marie on Tuesday, Jan. 6 as Caiden Gault scored his 12th goal to secure the Cappo Cup series win before the team prepares to host Augustana on Jan. 9-10.  WZMQ 19
  • LSSU Lakers edged NMU Wildcats 2—1 in overtime at the Cappo Cup game as Caiden Gault scored to tie and Adam Barone clinched the win on a breakaway. Two Wildcats reached a milestone by playing their 100th collegiate game.  WZMQ 19
  • MTU hockey beat Alaska Anchorage 5-0 on Saturday at Mullett Arena in the Desert Classic — Jack Anderson scored a hat trick while Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 25 key saves.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan University named Matt Janus as its 24th head football coach in Marquette today — he comes from a successful six-season run at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse where he led his team to multiple NCAA playoff berths.  WZMQ 19
  • The Northern Michigan Wildcats beat Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon 72-60 to mark their 12th straight win and improve to 13-1. Star player Dylan Kuehl scored 25 points (including key three-pointers) and the team will travel to Houghton on Thursday to face Michigan Tech.  WZMQ 19
  • The NMU women's basketball team battled hard at Vandament Arena on Saturday but fell to Grand Valley State, 66-78 — the Wildcats rallied late with a 16-2 run. Leading scorer Addison Pytleski tallied 18 points, and NMU will face Michigan Tech on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.  The Mining Journal
