COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A candlelight vigil for the disappeared and the unlawfully detained is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the courthouse steps — 234 W. Baraga Ave. in Marquette — hosted by Lake Superior Region Indivisible and will feature music, speakers and meditation. Participants should dress warmly.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Negaunee Public Library is hosting a monthly poetry and short story night beginning Thursday at 5 p.m. Residents can share their own work or a favorite piece at this free event open to all ages.  The Mining Journal
  • The Upper Peninsula Publishers & Authors Association announced its 7th Annual U.P. Notable Books List featuring 10 titles by local authors to raise representation in literature (a move to spotlight U.P. voices). The U.P. Notable Book Club, co-sponsored by the Crystal Falls District Community Library, will meet on Jan. 22.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NMU Police run Food for Fines today with the National Day of Giving; students donating full grocery bags of non-expiring items can have a $25 parking citation forgiven or enter a drawing for a free permit. The program, started in 2017, helps a food pantry serving (80 extra users) monthly.  The Mining Journal
  • Scot Stewart will lead an owl program comparing species and noting local visits at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13 in the Community Room at Peter White Public Library (a local venue in Marquette). He is a local writer, educator, and member of the Laughing Whitefish Bird Alliance.  The Mining Journal
  • Gavin Leach stepped down as interim president of NMU Thursday — after 36 years at the school, he will return to his role as vice president for Finance and Administration as Chris Olsen takes over the presidency.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services received $173,128,201 for FY 2026 (a five-year fund) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Rural Health Transformation Program to improve rural health care through partnerships, workforce recruitment, and tech upgrades, officials said.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marquette residents can try open curling at Lakeview Arena on Sundays from 7 to 10 p.m. and a curling competition sponsored by Meijer is scheduled for Feb. 14 (a chance to experience a winter Olympic sport firsthand).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Upper Michigan Ice Racing Association kicked off its season on Saturday, Jan. 3 in Gwinn with racers speeding on a quarter-mile ice track at speeds up to 70+ mph. Fans parked by the track and donated $5 at the gate while watching the action unfold.  WZMQ 19
