COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Guests enjoyed a horse-drawn sleigh ride today at Up North Lodge along snow-covered trails (riders met and snapped photos with the horses) as rides will be available until March.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • A new beginning line dancing class will be held at Dance Zone (entrance on College Avenue) at 1113 Lincoln Ave. It is scheduled for Sunday from 4:45-5:55 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 8 from 3-4:15 p.m.; the session costs $3 or is free with SilverSneakers insurance and no signup is required.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette's Tourist Park remains closed until further notice after a storm brought down trees and debris, and crews are assessing hazards to clear the area. Visitors should avoid the park and its off-leash area until officials announce a safe reopening.  WZMQ 19

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bates Bikes and Boards is opening today at 211 S Main Street in Ishpeming. The new store will serve local skaters, bikers, and scooter enthusiasts with a wide selection of equipment and on-site repairs (safety and maintenance are priorities) for the season.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After nearly two feet of snow fell across Upper Michigan, trail crews have been grooming almost 80 miles of trails by packing down snow and removing fallen trees. The Trail Administrator advises using snowshoes or skis until the trails firm up ahead of a slight warm up forecast next week.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • UP Health System - Marquette welcomed its first baby of 2026 with baby Connor (born at 2:37 a.m. on Jan. 1) as the hospital celebrated New Year's Day. The announcement was shared on Facebook.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Due to recent winter storm outages, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development issued guidance to keep food and water safe for residents in Marquette County, recommending that refrigerator and freezer doors remain closed and perishable foods be discarded if they exceed 40°F for over two hours.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU Basketball swept Davenport and MTU lost two games to Grand Valley State last night, reflecting a busy weekend in college hoops.  WZMQ 19
  • On Friday, the Wildcats beat the Davenport Panthers 73-46 as Jacy Weisbrod reached 1,000 career points with 15 during her team's sixth straight win (12-1 overall). The Wildcats will face No. 1 Grand Valley State today at 1 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Two young skiers from the Copper Country Snowsports Club earned third-place finishes in the Giant Slalom races at Mont Ripley Ski Area, and the team will race at Pine Mountain on Jan. 17.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Junior Hockey received a $15,000 grant from the Shiras Institute — the first payment in a multi-year plan to purchase a new Zamboni for the team.  The Mining Journal
  • The Northern Michigan Wildcats broke their team record on Friday by making 21 three-pointers in a 101-65 win over Davenport at Vandament Arena. Dylan Kuehl scored 33 points — the team improved to 12-1 and will face Grand Valley State tomorrow.  WZMQ 19
